MESSAGE FROM MAGGIE LYONS, CREATOR OF THE ORIGINAL SPUDDYBAG
For years I have noticed how difficult it can be to keep potatoes in good condition after purchase, and this seems to be a problem that every potato consumer recognises. Every year tons of potatoes are thrown away because they have “gone off” in various ways: they sprout excessively, they turn green, they go mushy, and they rot.
This gross waste has inspired me to invent the Original Spuddybag, intended to keep the nation’s favourite vegetable in the best possible condition after purchase in a purpose designed bag that is both stylish and effective. I truly believe that the sales potential for this simple product is enormous.
The Spuddybag is a potato storage bag with some excellent design features that make it attractive to display in any kitchen, with a choice of attractive colours to suit your kitchen decor. Made in top quality canvas and natural beige hessian, it holds 4 kg of potatoes and can be easily hand washed.
The design also really helps the potatoes keep well. The outer bag’s mesh air venting keeps the potatoes in ideal conditions so that they stay firmer and healthier for longer, while the inner bag’s drawstring and dark cotton fabric interior exclude light and so make the potatoes much less prone to sprouting and going green.
These claims are well founded. The Writtle Postharvest Unit at Writtle College, Essex conducted an Evaluation Trial on the Spuddy Bag in July 2007, and its report concluded that “… the Spuddybag gave beneficial results over the other two bags evaluated having neither disease or greening issues.” You can read their full report here.
